Baptism by Fire

April 26, 2015

Passage: Acts 2:1–2:13

Fire! - Winter/Spring 2015 Series
4 26 15 - Baptism of Fire, Acts 2:1-13

Introduction: What’s your primary love language? Giving and Receiving. (Touch, Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Gifts, Acts of Service)

How do we see these in God/the Spirit?

Read Colossians 2:16-17. At the risk of oversimplification, Pastor Don correlated O.T. feasts with Christ being their fulfillment:
Passover - Exodus/Deliverance - The Cross and death of Christ
First Fruits - Harvest - The Resurrection
Weeks/Pentecost - God’s gift of Provision - The Gift of the Holy Spirit
Trumpets - Ingathering - Christ’s return
Tabernacles - God’s settled rule - Heaven

Read John 5:39-40. What strikes you? What further do you deduce from all of this? What practical difference does it make in your life?

Sermon Outline

A. There was Wind! – a Symbol

a. What biblical references to wind come to mind? What suggestions do they imply?

b. If indeed the Wind (including breath) is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, then what inferences can be made?

c. Give an example of perhaps “pressing” this symbol too far? (Considering the old adage, “Don’t make a metaphor walk on all fours.”)

B. There was Fire! – a Symbol

a. What biblical references to fire come to mind? What suggestions do they imply?

b. If indeed, Fire is a symbol of the Holy Spirit, then what inferences can be made?

c. Give an example of perhaps “pressing” this symbol too far? (Considering the old adage, “Don’t make a metaphor walk on all fours.”)

C. There were Words! – a Reality

a. What do you make of verse 4ff.?

b. What evidence is there that these “tongues” were foreign languages?

c. How do you respond to a friend who shares with you his/her experience of speaking in tongues? (Speaking truth in love…)

d. Read Acts 4:31. What here, the second time for the disciples, replaces speaking in “other tongues”?

Conclusion: What are evidences that the Holy Spirit “has your tongue?” How will you give evidence tomorrow, that this is so?
