Fire! - Winter/Spring 2015 Series
January 11, 2015 - Fire on the Water, Genesis 1:1-5

Sermon Outline
Introduction: Read Genesis 1:1-2. What is the picture painted in your mind from these verses?
A. The Spirit forms what is formless.

a. Creation

i. Name the four essential elements of our world. Which three have been used as symbols of God or the Spirit? What might “the fourth” symbolize? (Unless you enjoy the sciences you may need to have listened to the sermon on this one…)

ii. For fun, what might be the “quintessential” element? (Maybe Colossians 1:17?)

b. Jesus

i. Is the forming of Jesus’ human body inside Mary’s womb a fair parallel here? How is it similar? Different?

c. Us

i. Do you resonate with, “sin deforms our souls” while the Spirit intends to “transform” us? How so? How is this working in your life these days?

B. The Spirit fills what is empty.

a. Creation

i. How can we conceptualize something both “formless” and “empty”? What’s the closest picture you can come up with?

b. Jesus

i. “Full of grace and truth.” What does this mean to you? (Where was the Spirit focused while Jesus was on planet earth?

c. Us

i. John 14:17; How does Jesus here describe the Spirit’s present and future involvement with His followers? Can you “spell out” what the difference might have been that Jesus was inferring?

ii. In what ways was your life “empty” before Jesus?

C. The Spirit brings light to what is dark.

a. Creation

i. What’s your thought when you hear that creation began 100% dark and that astronomers no tell us that our universe is 99.73% dark…Where’s the light?

b. Jesus

i. Tie these two statements of Jesus together. “I am the light of the world.” (John 8:12; 9:5) and “You are the light of the world.” (Mt. 5:14)

c. Us

i. In what ways was your life “dark” before Jesus?

ii. How has this impacted you?

iii. Who might you tell about it?
